As you read this page and do the activity that follows, please write all your information in your science notebook

mat•ter \"ma-t€r\ n : the substance of which a physical object is composed

prop•er•ty \"pra-per-te\ n, pl -ties : a quality peculiar to a thing

Each group needs to creat a chart to display the results of their investigation

to help you identify the powders you may use the information gathered about the properties of each white powder and the following information.

Salt and sugar feel grainy. Salt is cubic. Flower, talcum powder and baking soda feel smooth. Baking soda disolves in water (so do the two grainy ones).

There is still one identification problem to solve, when you are constructing this chart and it has two parts. The first part is to find out what the problem is. The second part is to devise a test to tell the answer to the problem you have found.

When your chart is completed you may check your substances against the list that the group who gave you the powders has kept safely in their science notebooks. Correct your chart if nessessary and hang your poster on the bulletin board.

Using the R.A.R.E essay form answer the following questions in your science notebook.

1. What is matter?

2. What are properties of matter?
